The main kinds of support
Doulas set their own packages, so the list below is a general picture and not a promise from any one provider.
- Practical help: meals, laundry, bottle washing, light tidying and errands
- Feeding support: a steady routine for night feeds and a second person to help
- Newborn care: routines shown to parents so they feel ready to take over
- Recovery education: what to expect in the first weeks and when to call a provider
- Family support: time for partners, siblings and other support people to settle in
Daytime support
Daytime visits fit families who want company, a hand with meals and household tasks, and someone to talk through the day. The daytime postpartum doula page covers what a visit can look like and how to plan for it.
Overnight support
Overnight visits fit families whose main problem is sleep. The overnight postpartum doula page explains how night hours work and what to ask a provider before you commit.
What a doula does not do
Doulas do not diagnose, treat or prescribe. If you feel very low, anxious or unsafe, contact your medical provider. You can also call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, which is free, confidential and open all day and night. The National Maternal Mental Health Hotline at 1-833-852-6262 is another free resource for pregnant and postpartum people, though it is not a crisis line.
Paying for support
Some families pay out of pocket and some qualify for SoonerCare doula services. Start with the cost examples and the SoonerCare page, then ask any doula you speak with to put their rates and what is included in writing.
Getting matched
Tell us about your situation on the contact page. We refer your details to a doula or other provider, who may contact you. We do not set rates and we do not provide the care ourselves.
Quick answers
Can I mix daytime and overnight help?
Often, though it depends on the doula. Say on the form which mix you are picturing.
How early can I start looking?
Many families begin during pregnancy, since popular dates can fill up. We cannot predict availability for your due date.
Does a doula replace my midwife or doctor?
No. Doula support sits alongside medical care and does not replace it.
